Foundation Stiftung Stift Neuzelle
The public Stiftung Stift Neuzelle Foundation was established in 1996 by the federal state of Brandenburg. Its objectives include the rebuilding of the historic monastery complex in Neuzelle, making it available to the general public and promoting science, education and culture. The assets of the Foundation include real estate and areas belonging to the Neuzelle Abbey which now amount to 7,800 ha and after 1990, were owned by the federal government and federal state and municipalities. The transfer of assets is to be completed in 2014. The building work aimed at the re-establishment of the monastery complex is conducted by the Brandenburgischer Landesbetrieb für Liegenschaften und Bauen (BLB). Until 2009, about EUR 30 million coming from the federal and federal-state resources and subsidies was spent on the renovation and restoration of the monastery complex. According to the present state, a further EUR 30 million is needed for investments. The Foundation receives subsidies and donations for the construction work from the federal state of Brandenburg as well as from different funding programs at the national and EU level.
In 2011 it was possible to begin further reconstruction work within the monastery complex. This work includes the German-Polish Educational Bridge project as well as renovation of the external premises, the Evangelical Parish Church of the Holy Cross, and reconstruction and extension of the riding stable for a museum and schooling and church purposes. In the year 2014, in the riding stable building, a museum with a permanent exhibition of the Neuzelle passion representations is to be opened. The renovation measures are to be largely completed by 750th anniversary of the foundation of the Neuzelle Abbey in 2018.
In the summer, the Foundation offers a comprehensive cultural program, with church concerts, exhibitions, world music in the orangery and the International Music Theatre Festival Oper Oder-Spree, which attracts many guests and visitors. The Neuzelle Abbey is visited by 120,000 guests yearly.
The Neuzelle Abbey with its two baroque churches, late Gothic cloister and baroque cloister gardens is promoted as a German and European cultural monument, a tourist attraction and an interesting location for the school with boarding facilities.
The Stiftung Stift Neuzelle is a lead partner of the whole German-Polish project of the Educational Bridge between Neuzelle and Zielona Góra whose total costs amount to EUR 7,662,826.
